2012 - Bungaree: the First Australian

Bungaree: The First Australian was an exhibition by sixteen emerging and established contemporary NSW Aboriginal artists who have created works that acknowledge and critically re-interpret the story of Bungaree, known as the Chief of the Broken Bay Aborigines, who was a central figure in early colonial Sydney.

This exhibition saw the reworking of historic Bungaree portraits take centre stage in the project and represented the first time an Indigenous perspective has been brought to bear on Bungaree the man. This exhibition provided artists opportunity to reclaim their ancestor’s intelligence, wisdom, assertiveness, humour, and generosity.

Curated by renowned Aboriginal curator Djon Mundine, the exhibition features artworks by Frances Belle-Parker, Mervyn Bishop, Daniel Boyd, Karla Dickens, Fiona Foley, Adam Hill, Warwick Keen, Gary Lee, Peter McKenzie, Danie Mellor, Caroline Oakley, Rea, Lynette Riley, Gordon Syron, Leanne Tobin and Jason Wing.
